What is a think tank, and why
People often picture a think tank as a group of experts writing reports far from the places where problems are felt. At CYDE Foundation we want to build one that stays close to those places. This article explains what a think tank is, what makes one trustworthy, and why we chose to pair research with action.
What a think tank does
A think tank researches public questions and shares its analysis so that governments, businesses, communities and citizens can decide better. Its products are studies, policy briefs, data, events and public debate. Think tanks differ in size, funding and political outlook, and some are closely tied to parties or industries. Readers are right to ask who is behind a piece of work.
Four marks of a credible think tank
Credibility comes from sound methods, verifiable sources and honesty about what the evidence cannot show. Independence means that findings follow the evidence and not the wishes of a funder. Integrity means that conflicts of interest are declared and mistakes are corrected where everyone can see. Transparency means the organisation says who supports it and how it is funded.
None of these is easy to prove from the outside, which is why we publish our methods and our supporters. Our Governance & Transparency page lists what we commit to.
Why add action to research
A study that nobody uses has little value, and a project that ignores the evidence can waste resources. When the two meet, each gets better. A pilot reveals what a policy paper missed, and a study explains why a pilot worked in one town and failed in another.
For a new association there is a second reason. We have no long record to point to, so each project we complete shows what we can deliver, and each publication shows how we think. Over time, that is how a reputation is built.
What this looks like in our four pillars
In climate, we study adaptation needs and support practical local responses. In youth, young people take part in research and in the design of activities. In digital, we look at how data helps communities monitor and reduce their footprint. In energy, we analyse efficiency, solar power and access, and we want to test solutions with partners.
What to expect next
We are still preparing our first publications. Our Research & Publications page explains how a study is made, and the Get Involved page shows how researchers and practitioners can contribute.
