COP31 in Antalya: why it matters for

The 31st UN Climate Change Conference, COP31, takes place in Antalya, Turkey, from 9 to 20 November 2026. For organisations working on climate, energy and young people in Morocco and Africa, it is an event to follow closely.

What a COP is

Each year, the countries that are parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meet to negotiate how to respond to climate change. Around the official negotiations, a wide community of civil society groups, researchers, companies and young people hold events, publish analysis and push for decisions.

Why it matters for Africa

Africa has contributed little to global emissions but is highly exposed to climate impacts, so adaptation and climate finance are central issues for the continent. Energy is another: millions of people still lack reliable electricity, and the shift to clean energy could bring jobs and investment if it is planned well. The continent also has the youngest population in the world, with a median age of around 19, and young people are asking for a seat at the table.

Morocco has a strong profile in climate diplomacy. It hosted COP22 in Marrakech in 2016, and its renewable energy projects, such as the Noor solar complex near Ouarzazate, are known well beyond the region.

What we will be watching

  • Discussions on adaptation and on how climate finance reaches the places that need it
  • Progress on the energy transition and on access to energy
  • Opportunities for young people to take part and to build skills
  • What Morocco and other African countries propose and negotiate

Access to the conference

Access to the official conference areas is limited to accredited participants, and accreditation is managed by the UN climate secretariat. Organisations without accreditation can still follow the public events, online sessions and the analysis published by partners and the press. We will share what we learn on this blog.
